Korea Expressway Corporation signs BIM data-sharing MOU to boost smart construction

Korea Expressway Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding on building information modeling (BIM) data exchange and technology cooperation Wednesday with Korea Airports Corporation, Korea National Railway, Korea Land and Housing Corporation, Korea Water Resources Corporation and the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology at Korea National Railway's headquarters.

BIM is a smart construction technology that integrates all information generated throughout a structure's entire life cycle — from planning and design through construction, maintenance and demolition — into a three-dimensional virtual model.

The MOU aims to establish a cooperative framework among major public project owners and lay the groundwork for standardizing BIM and spreading its use across the public sector.

Division heads from all six organizations attended the signing ceremony. Going forward, the institutions plan to cooperate actively in four areas: establishing BIM data-sharing methods and a standard framework, linking each organization's BIM standards and guidelines, exchanging experts, and sharing technology development outcomes while promoting results externally.

Yoon Han-su, head of Korea Expressway Corporation's construction division, said BIM enables the integrated three-dimensional management of design and construction data for expressways, improving efficiency in areas such as quantity and quality review and the prevention of construction errors and safety incidents. "Through this MOU, we will establish a standard framework and expand BIM application to all expressway construction routes in the future," he said.

Meanwhile, Korea Expressway Corporation plans to continue operating working-level consultative bodies to build a foundation for spreading and embedding BIM domestically and for the joint advancement of smart construction technology.
