Gangdong-gu Completes Long-Awaited Public Parking Facility After 12 Years

Gangdong-gu held a completion ceremony Wednesday for the Dongmyeong Neighborhood Park public parking facility, a project residents of Godeok-dong had sought for 12 years.

The facility, located at 229 Godeok-dong, was built beneath the neighborhood park and spans a total floor area of 7,298.17 square meters with 225 parking spaces. The total project cost came to 27 billion won ($19.9 million), with 8.5 billion won contributed by the city government and 18.5 billion won by the district.

The Godeok-dong residential area has long suffered from a chronic parking shortage, causing persistent inconvenience for residents. To address the problem, the district drew up a plan to build a public parking facility in 2014 and has been pursuing the project since.

Before construction began in 2021, residents submitted requests to ensure the safety of children commuting to a nearby elementary school. The district accepted the feedback and relocated the facility's entrance accordingly. With safety kept as the top priority throughout, the project was successfully completed in July.

Alongside the parking facility, the district widened Godeokro 79-gil to improve traffic conditions in the surrounding area. The Dongmyeong Neighborhood Park and sports facilities above the parking structure were also renovated, giving residents a comfortable space to park, relax and exercise.

"We expect the completion of the Dongmyeong Neighborhood Park public parking facility — a hard-won achievement 12 years in the making — to ease the parking shortage in the Godeok-dong residential area," Gangdong-gu District Mayor Lee Su-hee said. "We will continue to pay close attention to the everyday inconveniences residents face and steadily expand parking capacity."
