Wonju, a fast-growing industrial hub in central Korea, has launched a mayoral advisory body — the Advanced Industry Strategy Committee — to guide the city's development in AI, advanced medical technology and future mobility.
The city held the committee's inaugural meeting Thursday at Wonju City Hall, where members received their official appointments.
The committee, chaired by Wonju Mayor Ku Ja-yeol, comprises 20 members drawn from academia, industry, the medical sector and public institutions. It will discuss the direction of key policies and strategic projects related to advanced industries.
When pressing issues arise, the committee plans to form specialized subcommittees that include relevant domain experts, allowing the city to respond proactively to government policy.
The committee will also work with specialists on major priorities — attracting an advanced medical complex, fostering the AI industry and identifying opportunities in the future mobility sector — and will channel on-the-ground perspectives into policy to strengthen project execution.
Wonju aims to cultivate advanced industries as a new engine of growth in pursuit of its municipal vision, "Advanced Wonju Leading to the Future."
The city has identified three pillars for accelerating its goal of reaching a population of 500,000: nurturing future industries, attracting public institutions, and expanding tourism through a planned overhaul of its culture and tourism foundation next year.
"To get ahead of the rapidly changing advanced-industry landscape, it is essential not only to draw on expertise across fields but also to listen to voices from the ground," Mayor Ku said. "Working with experts through the Advanced Industry Strategy Committee, we will think through Wonju's future industries together and ensure that effort translates into business growth, quality job creation and a more vibrant local economy."
