Police in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju have launched an investigation after a scooter driver, believed to be a foreign national, struck a 9-year-old girl and fled the scene. The girl faces the potential loss of three permanent teeth, and her father has posted an appeal online asking for witnesses to come forward.
According to the Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station, the incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday under an underpass behind Dosan Station in Gwangsan-gu, when an electric scooter struck the girl and drove away.
Nearby closed-circuit television footage confirmed that the driver appeared to be a foreign national and that two people were riding the scooter at the time.
The girl lost one tooth in the collision and suffered another that was pushed up into her gum, requiring hospital treatment.
The girl's father posted on the online community Bobaedream, saying one of his daughter's teeth "came out immediately" while another "was pushed up into the gum." He added that after the holiday period ended and she underwent further examination, a third tooth was found to be cracked.
"A total of three teeth — permanent teeth — are at risk of being lost," the father wrote, urging anyone who had seen the scooter or its riders to contact him. He described the two riders as a foreign couple.
Police said they received a report of the accident and are working to identify the scooter's driver and passenger using nearby CCTV footage.
