'Gamer Day' event set for Wednesday in Seoul's Yongsan-gu
Cooperation with Samsung, Naver and others in focus
Lisa Su, chair and CEO of AMD, is returning to South Korea seven months after her last visit, during which she held a series of meetings with executives from Samsung Electronics and Naver and expanded AI computing cooperation with the government. Expectations are high for what her latest trip will yield.
AMD announced Monday that it will hold a "Gamer Day" event at Dragon City in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Su and Executive Vice President Jack Huynh will attend. AMD is a global chipmaker whose product lineup spans CPUs and GPUs. Su joined the company in 2012 and became CEO in 2014.
Industry watchers expect her to meet with AI chip companies and government officials during the visit to discuss cooperation opportunities. AMD has consistently expanded its ties with the South Korean government and domestic companies. Analysts see the move as an effort to broaden its business opportunities in the AI chip market dominated by Nvidia through deeper partnerships with Korean firms. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix have established themselves as key suppliers of components including HBM, while domestic platform, telecommunications and manufacturing companies are ramping up investment in AI data centers and related services.
During her March visit, Su met Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong at Seungji-won and held a separate meeting with Samsung Electronics CEO Jeon Young-hyun. She also met Naver CEO Choi Soo-yeon and agreed to cooperate on expanding the AI ecosystem. In July, she met Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT Bae Kyung-hoon in San Francisco, where the two sides agreed to pursue the development and demonstration of heterogeneous AI computing infrastructure linking AMD's CPUs and GPUs with domestically developed AI chip NPUs.
