A woman in her 20s has been referred to the Gwangju District Prosecutors Office on charges of murdering a newborn she allegedly abandoned in an apartment flowerbed.
The South Jeolla Provincial Police Agency's women and juvenile crime investigation unit transferred the woman, identified only as A, to the Gwangju District Prosecutors Office in detention on charges of child abuse murder, Yonhap reported Thursday.
A is accused of placing her newborn in a bag and abandoning it in a flowerbed near the management office of an apartment complex in Yeosu, South Jeolla Province, between Sept. 28 and Sept. 29, causing the infant's death.
Police launched an investigation after receiving a report Wednesday morning that a bag containing a newborn had been found, identified A as a suspect and arrested her on an emergency basis.
During the investigation, police determined that A had acted with intent to kill and upgraded the charge against her from child abuse resulting in death to child abuse murder.
Meanwhile, A reportedly told police during questioning that she could not remember the exact date she gave birth.
