The 31st Gwangjin Residents' Day ceremony was held at the district office's main auditorium on Thursday, featuring the Gwangjin Residents' Grand Award and serving as a meaningful occasion for pride, communication and community harmony.
Gwangjin-gu held the 31st Gwangjin Residents' Day ceremony at the district office's main auditorium at 2 p.m. Thursday.
Since 1995, Gwangjin-gu has designated May 25 — the date Achasan Fortress was listed as Historic Site No. 234 — as Gwangjin Residents' Day. Each year, the district uses the occasion to recognize residents who have brought honor to the community and to foster communication and unity.
About 700 people attended, including residents, distinguished guests, heads of civic organizations and past recipients of the Residents' Grand Award. The ceremony opened with a screening of winning entries from the 6th Gwangjin Video Contest, held under the theme "A Happy Gwangjin Worth Living In, as I Found It."
Following remarks by District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho and congratulatory speeches from guests, the program featured a sand-art performance celebrating the theme "A Happy Gwangjin With You — 31 Years of Stories."
The Gwangjin Residents' Grand Award ceremony was divided into two parts, each covering four categories. The first part recognized contributions in community development, donation and volunteering, education and cultural arts promotion, and sports promotion. A celebratory gayageum and cello duet featuring honorary ambassador Oh Hyun-ji followed. The second part honored achievements in economic revitalization, social welfare and public health, urban safety and the environment, and filial piety and model families.
The Gwangjin Residents' Grand Award, established in 1995, recognizes exemplary residents and organizations that have contributed to community development and the well-being of district residents. This year, six individuals and six organizations across eight categories received the honor.
The recipients by category were: Kim Mun-jong and the Junggok 1-dong Community Social Security Council in community development; Son Jun-yong and the Achasan Senior Welfare Society in donation and volunteering; the Gwangjin Arts and Culture Organizations Federation in education and cultural arts promotion; the Gwangjin-gu Jokgu Association in sports promotion; Yu Wan-jong and the Seoul Gwangjin Apparel Association in economic revitalization; An Sun-ja and the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism's Yeonghwasa Temple in social welfare and public health; Im Mi-suk in urban safety and the environment; and Bae So-young in filial piety and model families — 12 honorees in all, comprising six individuals and six organizations.
District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho said he was grateful to the recipients for their dedication to their neighbors and community, as well as to all residents who have supported Gwangjin's development. "Going forward, I will continue to listen to residents' voices on the ground with an even more humble attitude, and work to turn the changes we have set in motion into tangible results that people feel in their daily lives — so that together we can build a happy Gwangjin that is truly a great place to live," he said.
