Yoo Hyun-jo has taken a four-point lead at the KLPGA Tour HJ Shipbuilding & Construction·Dongbu Championship — purse 1 billion won ($747,000) — after three rounds of flawless golf, carding 23 birdies without a single bogey.
Playing Saturday at A-One Country Club (par 72, 6,504 yards) in Yangsan, South Gyeongsang Province, Yoo added six birdies and no bogeys for 12 points in the third round. Her three-round total of 46 points puts her four clear of second-placed Kim Min-sun7, who sits at 42.
Yoo has gone bogey-free across all 54 holes, picking up six birdies in the first round, 11 in the second and six more Saturday. She flew back to Korea immediately after competing at last week's Lotte Championship in Hawaii and has delivered an error-free performance despite a 19-hour time difference, drawing wide praise.
Yoo opened her scoring Saturday with a birdie at the par-5 third hole, sticking her third shot to within 50 centimeters of the cup. She followed with back-to-back birdies at holes 5 and 6, holing putts of 80 centimeters and 7 meters respectively. She then converted a 1.4-meter birdie putt at the par-4 10th, added a 3.2-meter birdie at the par-5 13th, and reached the par-5 15th in two before two-putting for another birdie.
The tournament uses a modified Stableford format: an albatross earns 8 points, an eagle 5, a birdie 2 and a par 0, while a bogey costs 1 point and a double bogey or worse costs 3.
Yoo credited her iron play for her strong showing. "I think my iron shots have been the biggest driving force," she said. "My control shots with the pitching wedge and similar clubs have been working really well this week." Looking ahead to the final round, she said the format can shift standings quickly. "In modified Stableford, a single eagle can change the leaderboard dramatically," she said. "Eagles on the par-5 holes in particular could make a big difference in the points gap, so how I play those holes will be a key factor in the title race."
Kim Min-sun7, a two-time winner this season, posted 11 points on the strength of four consecutive birdies at holes 14 through 17 to move into sole second place at 42 points. "I feel like I have always performed well in modified Stableford events," she said. "Being able to play aggressively is the biggest advantage, and it suits my game because I can make full use of my iron play, which is my strength."
On her chances of catching Yoo in the final round, Kim said building momentum early would be crucial. "I think how well I can get things going on the front nine will be important," she said. "If I stay focused on my own game, I believe I can produce a good result. I think I will need to score around 15 to 16 points in the final round to have a real shot at the title."
Seong Yu-bin sits alone in third at 39 points after adding 13 points Saturday on seven birdies and one bogey. Lee Ye-won is fourth at 37 points after picking up 10 points on the day.
Han A-reum, who entered the third round in sole second place, managed only two birdies against two bogeys for 2 points and dropped into a three-way tie for fifth at 35 points alongside Choi Ye-bon and Seo Eo-jin.
Defending champion Kim Min-sol added just 7 points — five birdies, three bogeys — to sit at 32 points in a share of 12th alongside Bang Sin-sil and Yoo Seo-yeon2. Trailing leader Yoo by 14 points, a comeback victory appears unlikely.
