Actress Kim Se-in has alleged that the head of her former agency pressured her into a romantic relationship, coming forward amid renewed attention to the case of the late Jang Ja-yeon — the actress who appeared in the 2009 KBS2 drama series "Boys Over Flowers" and left behind documents alleging she had been forced to provide sexual favors to powerful figures in business and the entertainment industry before her death.
A video titled "Why a once-popular actress now works as a Coupang Inc delivery driver" was posted Friday on the YouTube channel Ilsang Sogeuro.
In the video, Kim said she entered the entertainment industry at age five after being spotted at a children's beauty pageant her mother had encouraged her to enter. She went on to describe financial exploitation and personal demands made by a former agency head.
"When I was first taking minor roles, I got paid 7,000 won for 24 hours of filming," she said. "I was in middle school at the time — that was just how things were back then."
She added that the agency head had taken her appearance fees. "I was working so hard, and he just took off with my pay," she said. "He asked to borrow money, and I lent him several million won I had on hand. Then I had no money to pay my monthly rent and really struggled."
Kim also alleged that the pressure went further. "At the time of the Jang Ja-yeon case, something similar was happening to me," she said, claiming the agency head had pressured her into a relationship.
She recalled receiving a call from a crew member on a shoot day asking why she had not shown up. "It turned out that the previous day the agency head had been plying me with alcohol and said, 'If you won't date me, I'll cancel all your shoots,'" she said. "When I told him I had no interest in dating him, he simply never told me about the scheduled filming."
She added that she also suffered under a five-year exclusive contract that effectively kept her from working freely during that period.
Kim, who previously appeared in the sitcom "Oh My God" among other productions, eventually left the entertainment industry and worked as an overseas tour guide. She is currently working a part-time delivery job while caring for her mother, who has been in a coma for 15 years.
