16 garment business owners and workers selected for tailored training to earn national technical certification
Hands-on practice based on exam criteria and individual feedback helped participants prepare for the test
Dongdaemun-gu said it has successfully wrapped up its "2026 Dongdaemun-gu Sewing Technician Education" program, designed to enhance the expertise of local garment industry workers and help them obtain a national technical qualification.
The program was organized to support participants in earning the "sewing technician" national technical certification, a newly established qualification category introduced this year. The district recruited business owners and employees from garment companies registered in Dongdaemun-gu, selecting a total of 16 participants.
The training ran from July 26 to Aug. 23 at the Dongdaemun-gu Fashion and Sewing Support Center. The curriculum was built around the practical exam criteria for the sewing technician certification, offering hands-on, tailored instruction in the core sewing techniques required for the qualification test. Participants also practiced the full production process under conditions similar to the actual exam and received individual feedback as part of intensive practical training aimed at passing the certification.
As a result, six of the participants passed the sewing technician qualification exam. The program was significant in that it gave workers not just basic sewing skills but an opportunity to earn nationally recognized credentials and raise their professional standing.
Because the sewing technician national technical qualification was established only this year, the program was particularly meaningful in helping local garment workers prepare for the new certification system and have their accumulated skills formally recognized.
Dongdaemun-gu District Mayor Choi Dong-min said the program focused on intensive practical training aligned with the exam criteria for the newly created sewing technician certification. "We will continue to provide practical education and support so that workers in the local garment industry can have the skills they have built on the job recognized through formal qualifications and continue to develop their expertise," he said.
