Product covers pregnancy toxemia, gestational diabetes and other maternal conditions
Single-premium structure offers up to three years of coverage, including postpartum mental health and sleep tests
Hanwha General Insurance has launched a maternity insurance product focused on the health of expectant mothers rather than the fetus, refining its coverage within the women's insurance market to target pregnant women specifically.
Hanwha General Insurance said Monday it had released a digital-only product called "Hanwha Direct Maternity Insurance (non-dividend)," designed to cover maternal health from pregnancy and childbirth through the mother's return to daily life after delivery.
The company set "female wellness leading partner" as its vision and established a femtech research institute in 2023. It has since built a foothold in women's insurance by rolling out a series of women-specific coverage products, including what it says was the industry's first "Signature Women's Health Insurance." The new product extends that strategy, aimed at broadening life-cycle wellness care for women on the basis of its accumulated women's health research.
Pregnancy and childbirth bring significant physical changes for women, yet existing related insurance products have largely focused on risks to the fetus or child. Hanwha General Insurance identified this gap and, reflecting social shifts such as the rise in older mothers, analyzed the key risks and practical concerns that mothers face during pregnancy and delivery to design the coverage.
The policy term is capped at three years — a deliberately short window that accounts for the pregnancy period and the mother's postpartum recovery. Premiums are paid in a single lump sum, reducing both the financial and psychological burden on policyholders.
Core coverage items include benefits for pregnancy toxemia diagnosis, specific gestational diabetes diagnosis, placental abruption diagnosis, surgery and hospitalization costs for pregnancy- and childbirth-related conditions, and amniotic fluid embolism diagnosis. The product is designed to cover a broad range of illness risks that can arise before and after delivery.
The policy also addresses emotional risks that mothers may face during postpartum child-rearing. Benefits for stress-related specific mental illness diagnosis and support for specific sleep tests are included, with the aim of helping mothers return to healthy daily routines.
The product is open to applicants between the ages of 20 and 42 and can be purchased through the Hanwha General Insurance direct website and the Carrot app.
Beyond insurance products, Hanwha General Insurance is also expanding its touchpoints with female customers through services. Its recently launched women's wellness solution brand, Plus Clovr, offers an app where anyone can access content on pregnancy, childbirth and child-rearing, along with a feature that lets users record and track physical changes during pregnancy.
"Starting with the Signature Women's Health Insurance, we have deeply researched the lifestyle and life-cycle risks facing women and have continuously developed coverage for them," a Hanwha General Insurance official said. "We will continue to lead women's wellness with differentiated products and services that carefully protect women's healthy lives."
Meanwhile, the product is also available to those who are more than 22 weeks pregnant at the time of enrollment. In such cases, benefits for pregnancy toxemia (including eclampsia) diagnosis and for abnormal prenatal screening findings are not covered, but coverage for emergency situations and hospitalization- and surgery-related items remains intact.
