Bill would require 48-hour notice to Congress if intelligence to Ukraine, Israel or Taiwan is curtailed
DNI director also directed to strengthen intelligence ties with Australia, Philippines, Thailand in Indo-Pacific
Legislation is advancing in the United States that would require the government to notify Congress within 48 hours whenever intelligence support to Ukraine, Israel and other allies is restricted or suspended.
According to the Senate Intelligence Committee on Monday (local time), the fiscal year 2027 Intelligence Authorization Act includes a provision requiring the director of national intelligence to notify Congress if intelligence support to Israel, Ukraine or Taiwan is restricted or curtailed.
The bill was introduced in May. The provision is widely seen as a congressional safeguard against the Donald Trump administration unilaterally cutting off intelligence support to countries at war.
The measure is particularly understood to be aimed at ensuring continued intelligence support to Ukraine. Immediately preceding that provision, the bill devotes more than 10 pages of detailed language directing US intelligence agencies to ensure that intelligence support to Ukraine is not suspended.
The bill also calls on the director of national intelligence to work toward strengthening intelligence foundations among the United States, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, the Philippines, South Korea and Thailand to deepen intelligence cooperation across the Indo-Pacific region.
