Mayor Min Kyung-sun: 'We will support community activities so they can drive change in Goyang'
Goyang Special City held a commissioning ceremony for the 6th Autonomous Community-Building Committee and its second regular meeting of 2026 on Monday at a video conference room on the fourth floor of the Goyang City Council building.
At the ceremony, 12 appointed members received their commissioning certificates, and participants discussed the direction of autonomous community policy and upcoming priorities.
The 6th committee comprises 17 members in total — five ex officio and 12 appointed. The appointed members will serve two-year terms running from Oct. 1, 2026, to Sept. 30, 2028.
"The healthier communities grow, the greater the capacity to solve local problems — and the richer the lives of residents become," Goyang Special City Mayor Min Kyung-sun said. "Drawing on the expertise and experience of committee members, we will actively support resident-led community activities so they can drive real change in Goyang."
The meeting covered an overview of committee operations and the current status of autonomous community support centers, and reviewed the outcomes of this year's village community projects.
This year, Goyang is providing a total of 35 million won ($26,100) to 10 communities through a resident-proposal grant program, supporting activities across a wide range of areas — including social participation for youth with borderline intellectual functioning, caregiver groups for children with developmental disabilities, environmental protection, support for multicultural families, and care for the elderly.
The city is also strengthening residents' capabilities and expanding the foundation for community activity through training in accounting, public relations and AI, workshops for community organizers, and exchanges and site visits between communities.
The meeting also addressed preliminary planning for the second master plan for autonomous community building, covering 2027 to 2031. Goyang intends to review best practices from other local governments and gather input from local organizers and residents to reflect on-the-ground needs and challenges in the plan. Related research is set to begin at the Goyang Research Institute in November.
Goyang said it will continue working with the Autonomous Community-Building Committee to broaden civic participation and build a community foundation where residents can tackle local challenges and grow together.
