Facade design recognized for connecting distinct spaces across mixed-use complex
Three other products also earn GD marks
Lotte Engineering & Construction announced Wednesday that Le West, its large-scale MICE complex in the Magok district of Gangseo-gu, Seoul, won a bronze award at the 2026 Good Design Award for its exterior design.
The Good Design Award, hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and organized by the Korea Institute of Design Promotion, is South Korea's most prestigious design competition. Now in its 42nd year since launching in 1985, the award evaluates products on design, appearance, functionality and economic value, granting a "Good Design" mark to those that meet its standards and presenting special awards to the top-rated entries.
Le West, which took the bronze, is a large-scale MICE complex spanning four blocks — CP1, CP2, CP3-1 and CP3-2 — in the Magok district of Gangseo-gu. The CP1 block houses COEX Magok and Mercure Seoul Magok; the CP2 block contains the officetel Lotte Castle Le West; the CP3-1 block is home to the senior residence VL Le West; and the CP3-2 block accommodates office and commercial facilities.
The exterior design of Le West was conceived around the concept of "Urban Layer & Connectivity," with a focus on creating a mixed-use cityscape that naturally links the complex's functionally distinct spaces into a unified whole. The design contrasts horizontal layers on non-residential structures with vertical frames on residential ones to preserve each building's individual character, while a palette of beige, gray and blue tones ties the ensemble together into a cohesive, three-dimensional urban landscape.
Each block also features its own distinctive facade treatment. The CP1 block maximizes dynamism and openness through a projecting cantilever structure paired with a large media facade and transparent glass curtain wall. The CP2 block arranges vertical frames clad in gray and beige brick-tile panels, while the CP3-1 block applies vertical stone panels with a curtain-wall look.
"This award is especially meaningful because it recognizes Le West not only for its interior functionality but also for the excellence of an exterior design that enhances the value of the urban landscape," a Lotte Engineering & Construction official said.
Three other Lotte Engineering & Construction entries also received GD marks at this year's award: the "Birch Lake" garden at Wonju Lotte Castle Signature, the artwork "Stardust" at Cheongdam Le El, and the community spaces at VL Le West, which support cultural and leisure exchange among residents.
Meanwhile, Lotte Engineering & Construction said it will become the first construction company in South Korea to introduce an AI voice-recognition home network control service, which allows residents to control in-unit devices directly through voice commands on a smart home application.
