South Chungcheong Province is introducing a regional climate insurance program designed to protect vulnerable residents from the worsening climate crisis.
The province held a forum on the introduction of the program Wednesday as a policy session of the 10th South Chungcheong Carbon Neutrality International Conference at Sonobell Cheonan.
About 50 participants attended the forum, including climate crisis experts, insurance industry representatives, provincial and municipal officials, and civic group members, who discussed ways to introduce an effective climate insurance system suited to the region's characteristics.
The forum featured presentations on the necessity and role of climate insurance in responding to the climate crisis, case studies on its introduction and operation, and product design and operational examples, followed by an expert panel discussion.
The panel discussion centered on practical coverage measures for those most vulnerable to climate disasters and on insurance design and operational directions that reflect local conditions.
The province plans to first roll out the climate insurance program targeting vulnerable groups — including children, the elderly and low-income households — and gradually expand coverage going forward.
"As climate-related damage becomes a daily reality, it is important to establish a protection system that residents can genuinely feel," a provincial official said. "We will reflect opinions from diverse fields to build a climate insurance system suited to South Chungcheong Province's regional characteristics."
