Rob Jetten, the Netherlands' first LGBTQ+ prime minister, announced he and his fiancé are expecting a child next year through a surrogate.
Jetten, 39, shared the news Monday (local time) on Instagram, posting a photo of himself holding a fetal ultrasound image alongside his fiancé, Nicolas Kienan.
"Someone very special is on the way. See you in 2027, little one," he wrote. He added that he could not find words to express his gratitude to the egg donor and surrogate Lisa, and their families. "Without you, none of this would have been possible," he said.
Jetten became engaged to Kienan, an Argentine field hockey player, in 2024. He became the Netherlands' youngest-ever prime minister and its first from the LGBTQ+ community in February this year, after his center-left party D66 won last year's general election.
The couple conceived with the help of an egg donor and a surrogate. In a statement, Jetten said he was grateful to "two wonderful women for giving us the chance to fulfill our dream."
D66 said the pregnancy was made possible with the help of Dutch friends who are already parents, adding that both the surrogate and the egg donor are personal acquaintances of Jetten and Kienan and that no commercial surrogacy was involved.
The Netherlands permits altruistic surrogacy, in which no payment is exchanged. Lisa, the couple's surrogate, said she sees surrogacy as "a special way to help dear friends make their dream come true."
