Korea Environment Corporation and Korean Society of Wetland Science sign MOU on natural environment restoration and wetland ecosystem conservation
Two organizations to jointly identify OECM candidate sites and collaborate on research and education
The Korea Environment Corporation signed an MOU with the Korean Society of Wetland Science on Wednesday at its headquarters in Seongdong-gu, Seoul, on the conservation and management of natural environments and wetland ecosystems.
The agreement aims to build a foundation for cooperation by linking field restoration projects with academic research to support the scientific restoration and systematic performance management of wetland and riparian ecosystems.
Key areas of cooperation include technology collaboration on natural environment restoration and wetland and riparian ecosystems, monitoring and performance evaluation of restoration projects, identification and management of other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs), policy and research exchanges and expert networking, and education, outreach and professional development.
The Korea Environment Corporation will identify eligible projects — including natural environment restoration initiatives and OECM sites — and provide field data and joint project support to ensure that research findings are applied to actual restoration work and policy.
The Korean Society of Wetland Science will draw on its network of wetland and riparian ecosystem experts to offer technical and academic advice on the planning, design and construction of restoration projects, and will assist with ecological surveys, monitoring and performance evaluation.
Under the agreement, the two organizations will jointly identify candidate OECM sites of high ecological value and review conservation and management strategies. They also plan to share best practices and research findings through joint studies, academic conferences and training sessions, and to strengthen cooperation in applying restoration technologies in the field.
Korea Environment Corporation President Shin Jin-su said the MOU "will serve as an opportunity to raise the quality of natural environment restoration projects by linking field work with academic expertise," adding that the corporation will "continue to enhance the effectiveness of restoration projects through scientific monitoring and systematic performance management, and expand cooperation for biodiversity conservation."
