Incheon police have launched an investigation after a woman in her 20s was accused of repeatedly throwing an acquaintance's dog to the ground, injuring the animal.
According to the Incheon Bupyeong Police Station, a complaint was filed alleging that a woman identified only as A assaulted a dog in front of a supermarket in Bupyeong-gu at around 10:55 p.m. on Oct. 2.
The two sisters who own the dog said A threw their pet to the ground 13 times over roughly 20 minutes.
The case was also covered Tuesday by JTBC's crime-news program Sageon Banjang.
The sisters said in a tip that their dog's leash had snapped, prompting them to enter the supermarket, and that they briefly left the dog in A's care after being told pets were not allowed inside — only for the incident to occur in their absence.
When the sisters came back out after failing to reach A by phone, they found blood around the dog's mouth. A offered no explanation when confronted, according to the sisters.
Surveillance footage from the supermarket later showed A repeatedly pulling the dog out of a shopping cart and throwing it to the ground whenever no one was nearby.
A is believed to have taken out her frustration on the dog after the sisters made remarks she perceived as discriminatory and dismissive toward her.
The dog sustained serious injuries to its spine and legs and was hospitalized, with further surgery reported to be necessary.
Police said they plan to investigate the full circumstances of the incident based on closed-circuit television footage from the scene and statements from the complainants.
