Shinsegae Group is expected to carry out a sweeping leadership overhaul centered on its E-mart division when it announces its regular executive personnel changes Friday.
According to retail industry sources, Shinsegae notified key executives Thursday of their retirement status as part of the reshuffle process. The changes are expected to see a large number of executives born in the 1960s replaced, particularly within the E-mart division.
Chairman Chung Yong-jin, who is set to return as E-mart's chief executive, is expected to focus on steering both the group's existing retail operations and its future businesses at the same time. Chung has been accelerating an expansion into new ventures, including AI data centers, large-scale hotel mixed-use developments and an equity investment in Warner Bros.
The group's management strategy office, which serves as its central control tower, is also expected to undergo changes. Shinsegae has been working to transform the office into a body that oversees new businesses such as AI and large-scale mixed-use development while identifying future growth engines.
The head of the management strategy office position has been vacant since late April, when Im Yeong-rok was relieved of the concurrent post. With Chung having led the office directly since then, attention is focused on whether the reshuffle will produce a new head.
Should a successor be named, observers expect changes not only in the division of responsibilities between that person and Chung, but also in how the group formulates strategy and manages its affiliates.
By contrast, the department store division led by Chairwoman Chung Yu-kyung is expected to see a relatively subdued round of changes, with personnel moves limited to areas of genuine need.
The reshuffle is also drawing attention as a step toward formalizing independent management structures within the group, as Shinsegae has been laying the groundwork for a separation of affiliates — including the unwinding of its stake in SSG.com.
