Congregant's post goes viral after evangelist who preached sexual purity announces December wedding
A story about a church evangelist who had long preached premarital chastity and sexual purity — only to get his girlfriend pregnant and announce plans to marry — has gone viral after a bewildered congregant shared the experience online.
The post appeared Thursday on Nate Pann, a popular Korean online community, under the title "Getting a reality check from a premarital pregnancy at church." The Korean slang term "hyeonta," short for "hyeonsil jagak taim," refers to the jarring moment when illusions give way to reality.
The author, identified only as A, wrote that "the evangelist at our church got a fellow member pregnant and is getting married in December," and went on to describe what had recently unfolded at the congregation.
The evangelist had reportedly taught the church's youth and young adult groups that they must uphold biblical values and maintain sexual purity.
"He was someone who repeatedly told us that even watching adult videos counts as adultery in the Bible, and that the world had become far too promiscuous," A wrote. "He went on and on about immorality and the state of the world, and then when it comes down to it, he goes and does exactly that — a premarital pregnancy — so I had nothing to say."
A added that the incident had pushed them toward leaving the church. "He did everything himself, and now I've had my reality check — I'm thinking of going once or twice more and then stopping. I'm so disappointed," the post read.
Commenters were largely unsympathetic toward the evangelist. "Church oppa types are always the worst," one wrote. Others said he had "evangelized with his body," compared him to people who lie constantly yet preach against lying, and criticized the gap between his doctrine and his conduct — "If you were going to do that anyway, at least stop pretending."
