A woman who had just finished an overtime shift never made it home. A worker at a mobile phone parts manufacturer in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, was killed Saturday after being struck by a falling object as she left work.
According to Yonhap and the Masan East Police Station, a transformer radiator fell from an exterior emergency staircase on a two-story building at a mobile phone parts facility in Yangdeok-dong, Masan Hoewon-gu, Changwon, at around 12:12 p.m. Saturday, striking a woman in her 40s identified only as A.
A, an employee at the facility, was seriously injured and transported to a hospital, where she later died. She had been on her way home after completing an overtime shift when the accident occurred, police said.
The transformer radiator weighed approximately 60 kilograms and fell from a height of about 4 meters.
At the time of the accident, a subcontractor hired by the facility was removing a disused transformer from the second-floor electrical room.
Police believe the accident occurred when a hand cart carrying the transformer radiator caught on the edge of the exterior emergency staircase, sending the load flying outward. Investigators are looking into the exact circumstances of the incident.
