A woman who had just completed a full marathon drove her vehicle onto a sidewalk in Chuncheon, seriously injuring pedestrians.
According to police, a Carnival minivan driven by a woman in her 40s, identified only as A, struck pedestrians on a sidewalk near a three-way intersection by the futsal court at Uiam Park in Samcheon-dong, Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, at around 2:50 p.m. Sunday.
Two people were seriously injured — a 65-year-old surnamed B and a 32-year-old woman surnamed C — while a 35-year-old surnamed D sustained abrasions. All three were taken to hospital.
The driver had completed a full marathon earlier that day and was on her way home when she made a U-turn and caused the accident, according to the Gangwon Domin Ilbo. She reportedly told police she could not remember what happened at the time of the crash.
The 80th National Marathon Championships and the 2026 Chosun Ilbo Chuncheon Marathon were held in Chuncheon that day.
