The district signed an agreement with the Catholic Archdiocese of Seoul's 11th Gangnam District, pledging administrative support and use of local resources. District Mayor Kim Hyun-ki vowed to spare no effort in ensuring a successful event.
Gangnam-gu signed a memorandum of understanding Monday with the organizing committee for the 2027 Seoul World Youth Day and the Catholic Archdiocese of Seoul's 11th Gangnam District, establishing a cooperation framework to ensure the event's success.
The signing ceremony, held at the Gangnam-gu district office, was attended by Gangnam-gu District Mayor Kim Hyun-ki, Father Hong Seong-hak, head of the archdiocese's 11th Gangnam District, Father Lee Young-je, planning director of the organizing committee, and about 10 other officials.
The 2027 Seoul World Youth Day (WYD), organized by the Vatican, is a large-scale gathering where young people from around the world come together to share faith and friendship. The event is scheduled to run from July 29 to Aug. 8, 2027, across Seoul and 15 dioceses nationwide.
Under the agreement, Gangnam-gu will provide administrative support for the smooth operation of the event, while the 11th Gangnam District will work with local residents on activities to enhance convenience for participants.
"With Monday's MOU as a starting point, we will work closely with the 11th Gangnam District and spare no effort to ensure the event is a success," District Mayor Kim Hyun-ki said. "We hope the 2027 Seoul World Youth Day will serve as a meaningful occasion for young people from around the world — the leaders of tomorrow — to discover Korea's culture and values, connect with one another, and share new hope."
