Opening targeted for June next year... Minister Choi Hwi-young, local lawmakers convene to review preparations
District proposes urban landscape improvements along Sanggye-ro, Nohae-ro and Nowon Station area connecting to Seoul Arena
Nowon-gu accelerates K-tourism readiness ahead of arena opening, Phenomenon event and other major draws to northeast Seoul
Although Seoul Arena is located in Dobong-gu, its opening is expected to have significant spillover effects on neighboring Nowon-gu — particularly in terms of traffic — making preparations there increasingly urgent.
Against that backdrop, Nowon-gu said Wednesday that it discussed cooperation measures to boost K-culture tourism with Culture, Sports and Tourism Minister Choi Hwi-young during a site visit to the Seoul Arena construction site.
Minister Choi visited the site at 5 p.m. Wednesday to review construction progress and opening preparations. Seoul Arena, targeted to open in June next year, will be the country's largest dedicated pop music venue. Once open, it is expected to serve as a cultural tourism hub drawing domestic and international tourists through K-pop concerts and other large-scale cultural events.
The site visit was attended by Nowon-gu District Mayor Seo Jun-o, Ministry of Climate, Environment and Energy Minister Kim Sung-hwan — who also serves as a National Assembly member for Nowon-eul — along with Dobong-gu District Mayor Kim Dong-wook, and Assembly members Oh Gi-hyeong (Dobong-eul) and Kim Jae-seop (Dobong-gap). Participants reviewed transportation and accommodation conditions in anticipation of increased tourist traffic after the arena opens, and discussed ways to link the venue with local tourism resources.
District Mayor Seo proposed improvements to the urban landscape along Sanggye-ro and Nohae-ro — key routes on the Nowon Station-to-arena corridor — as well as the area around Nowon Station itself.
Seoul Arena faces Dobong-gu across the Jungnang Stream. When arena visitors use subway lines 4 and 7 at Nowon Station or travel via major roads, the stretch through Nowon-gu is expected to serve as a critical transit route. Across from the arena, in the Sanggye-dong Changdong vehicle depot site in Nowon-gu, the S-DBC advanced industry cluster is also being developed, raising expectations for integrated cultural, tourism and industrial growth in the area.
To improve the landscape and pedestrian environment along key transit routes, the district proposed media walls and landscape lighting on above-ground subway viaduct piers, the creation of a green art walkway, and an integrated design upgrade spanning the arena, Nowon Station and the Nowon Culture Street. The vision goes beyond a simple transit corridor — it aims to offer tourists a differentiated cultural walking experience while stimulating the local economy across the Changdong-Nowon area.
The district is paying close attention to the potential for domestic and international visitors to flow into the northeastern Seoul area centered on Nowon-gu and Dobong-gu, driven by the Seoul Arena opening in June next year, the Seoul World Youth Day in August and the Phenomenon event in December. Plans call for improving pedestrian connections between Seoul Arena and the Nowon Station commercial district, and strengthening tourism infrastructure linked to local cultural and tourism resources.
"The Seoul Arena opening and the S-DBC development are key projects for a new leap forward in northeastern Seoul," District Mayor Seo said. "Cooperation among Nowon-gu, Dobong-gu and the Seoul Metropolitan Government is essential, as is attention and support from the central government." Seo added that the district would do its utmost to ensure that visiting Seoul Arena becomes a new experience in the city and an opportunity for the development of the northeastern area, with safety and convenience as the foundation.
