Incheon Global Campus is rapidly reaping the rewards of its push to strengthen industry-academia cooperation.
Just over three months after the launch of a new industry-academia governance framework in July, concrete results are emerging — most notably a sharp rise in research contract awards.
At the first regular meeting of the IGC Industry-Academia Cooperation Strategy Committee, held Wednesday by the Incheon Global Campus Operating Foundation, cumulative research contract awards by resident universities stood at 58 projects worth a combined 5.58 billion won ($4.18 million) as of the end of August.
That figure already surpasses the full-year total for last year — 4.96 billion won — in just eight months.
Cumulative contract awards since 2020 have also reached 28.6 billion won across 415 projects, underscoring IGC's growing standing as a research and development hub.
Behind the surge is a deliberate strategy by the foundation to build systematic support infrastructure — starting with the creation of a dedicated industry-academia cooperation team in April, followed by the launch of the strategy committee in July.
Beyond research metrics, industry-linked results are also accumulating on the ground. The foundation has significantly expanded its technology research base by supporting 20 projects under the SEED R&D program for resident universities and research institutes, and by building a dedicated research-matching platform to connect researchers with companies.
Efforts to help global talent put down roots in the local economy have also taken shape. The foundation has engaged leading advanced-technology companies in Incheon to discuss talent recruitment, organized site visits, and launched credit-linked field training programs at six institutions. A dedicated student startup office has also been completed to support hands-on entrepreneurship.
"The research contract results and corporate engagement activities show that IGC is moving beyond a simple education space and transforming into an innovative academic-research-industry K-platform," said Byeon Ju-yeong, chief executive of the IGC Operating Foundation. "We will continue to gather the wisdom of field experts and accelerate our efforts to create a tangible industrial ecosystem."
