The Gajwa integrated fecal waste treatment facility in Incheon, which had long drawn complaints over serious odors, has been transformed into a clean, eco-friendly facility through dramatically improved odor-reduction technology.
According to the Incheon Environmental Corporation on Monday, the improvement work reduced hydrogen sulfide — one of the primary odor-causing compounds — by 95.1 percent, while composite odor levels fell by 87 percent.
The key to the results was facility renovation that addressed the root causes of odor generation.
The corporation applied a range of environmental improvements centered on an upgraded agitation method for raw fecal waste storage tanks — selected as the top improvement case in the first half of this year — including enhanced odor collection and facility sealing, introduction of an eco-friendly atmospheric-dispersion odor reduction system, and an overhaul of on-site working conditions.
The corporation will hold an odor improvement results presentation at the Gajwa office on Wednesday to publicly share the facility's achievements in dramatically reducing odors.
Notably, the event will feature an unusual experiential program in which attendees drink coffee on the floor of the fecal waste receiving area — once the most pungent spot at the facility.
