A couple in their 30s in Jecheon, North Chungcheong Province, has become the talk of the region after having twins two years in a row — beating odds of roughly 1 in 100,000, or 0.001 percent.
According to Jecheon city, Ju Woo-seong, 34, and Jin Eun-a, 33, of Cheongjeon-dong welcomed their first set of twins, Siwon and Sion, in February last year, then had a second set, Sihyeon and Sihun, in February this year, making them parents of four.
Both pregnancies were natural conceptions. The probability of having two consecutive sets of naturally conceived twins is estimated at roughly 1 in 100,000, making it an extraordinarily rare occurrence.
A local civic group in Cheongjeon-dong delivered eight boxes of diapers and 700,000 won ($523) in cash to the family in congratulations.
The couple will receive a total of 307.48 million won in postpartum, birth and child-rearing benefits — including 106 million won in Jecheon's birth incentive grants — until all four children turn 9.
"The four children born through this 1-in-100,000 miracle, and their family, are a source of great joy and celebration for all of Jecheon," Jecheon Mayor Lee Sang-cheon said. "We will continue to provide meaningful, tangible support that families with multiple children can truly feel."
