Napa cabbages piled up at Garak Agricultural and Marine Products Wholesale Market in Songpa-gu, Seoul, on Thursday morning as a bumper autumn harvest drove wholesale prices for napa cabbage and radish down 37 percent and 31 percent, respectively, below average levels. Some farmers have begun abandoning their harvests as prices collapse. To support struggling growers, the government plans to expand its kimchi-making season discount budget to 64 billion won — up 14 billion won ($10.4 million) from last year — and launch a campaign encouraging households to make an extra head of kimchi to stimulate consumption.
