Participating in Taipei 'Gaming OLED Roadshow'
Targeting 43-million-unit gaming monitor market
Showcases 39-inch 5K2K gaming OLED
World's first mass-produced RGB stripe OLED panel on display
BFI technology makes debut
LG Display is accelerating its push into the global gaming monitor market by unveiling its next-generation gaming OLED technology roadmap and new product lineup. The strategy centers on high-resolution and ultra-high refresh rate technology to strengthen its lead in the premium OLED segment.
The company presented its differentiated gaming OLED technologies and future roadmap to global IT set makers at the "Gaming OLED Roadshow" held Thursday in Taipei, Taiwan. About 20 global customers, including LG Electronics, attended to evaluate the technologies firsthand and discuss areas of cooperation.
The company's top-tier gaming OLED products were on display at the event. LG Display showcased a 39-inch 5K2K gaming OLED panel combining a 21:9 ultra-wide aspect ratio with a 1500R curvature to deliver an immersive gaming experience. LG Display is currently the only manufacturer mass-producing 39-inch 21:9 OLED panels. The company also plans to introduce a 21:9 panel for a 45-inch product incorporating its proprietary "Primary RGB Tandem" technology.
Also on display was an RGB stripe OLED panel that entered mass production this month — a world first. The RGB stripe structure enhances text sharpness and color reproduction, delivering superior image quality for gaming and document work alike.
LG Display also made the public debut of its BFI (Black Frame Insertion) technology at the event. The technology inserts brief black frames between video frames to reduce motion blur, enabling sharp visuals comparable to those at high refresh rates even at relatively lower refresh rates. The company expects BFI to improve perceived performance in esports and first-person shooter games without requiring a high-end graphics card.
The company also presented a roadmap for DFR 2.0 (Dynamic Frequency & Resolution), its next-generation gaming OLED technology. DFR allows seamless switching between high-resolution and high-refresh-rate modes depending on content. The next version targets switching between UHD 240Hz and FHD 960Hz, as well as QHD 540Hz and HD 1000Hz — aiming to achieve a 1000Hz refresh rate, which would be a first for an OLED panel.
LG Display also unveiled a 24.5-inch gaming OLED panel aimed at the dedicated esports market. Supporting FHD resolution and a 540Hz refresh rate, the panel reflects the screen size preferred by professional gamers. With this addition, LG Display's gaming OLED lineup now spans 24.5 inches to 45 inches, making it the broadest range in the industry.
Chinese rivals have recently entered the monitor OLED market as well. Jang Jun-hyeok, head of large-format product planning, said customer expectations for gaming OLED are extremely high, and it remains to be seen whether Chinese entrants have reached the necessary level in mass production scale and performance. "OLED monitors are the flagship product for each brand," he said. "If they fail to meet customer expectations on picture quality, refresh rate and response time, they will ultimately be pushed out of the technology competition on their own."
He went on to say that as GPUs (graphics processing units) evolve rapidly, monitor content is advancing just as fast. "We will proactively present customers not only with technologies ready for immediate deployment but also with future product roadmaps, so that we can lead the market," he said.
Since entering the gaming OLED market in 2022, LG Display has rapidly expanded its foothold by securing major global monitor manufacturers as customers. Market research firms project that demand for premium gaming monitors will continue to grow, driven by the spread of AI PCs and wider adoption of high-performance graphics cards.
LG Display plans to raise the share of monitor panels in its large OLED panel shipments this year from the low double digits to around 20 percent.
