Woo Seung-hee wins Yeongam-gun county chief race, vows to build 'prosperous Yeongam'

Democratic Party of Korea candidate Woo Seung-hee won the Yeongam-gun county chief race in South Jeolla Province in the June 3 local elections, pledging to build "a more prosperous Yeongam."

A two-term South Jeolla Provincial Assembly member, Woo defeated former county chief Jeon Dong-pyeong — who was seeking a third term — in the Democratic Party primary, as he had in the 2022 local elections, before advancing to the general race.

Woo ran on five campaign pledges: launching a Yeongam-style rural basic income program, expanding a comprehensive care model nationwide, establishing a public bank, introducing a youth tuition, residential and employment guarantee scheme, and building an integrated bus and taxi transport service.

"I am grateful that the people of Yeongam have again entrusted me with the authority of county chief by such an overwhelming margin," Woo said. "I will gladly accept this as the people's mandate to carry forward, without wavering, the change and innovation that began in Yeongam."

"I will return to county administration and complete the plans and initiatives I have been working to put into action for Yeongam's transformation," he said. "Together with the Lee Jae Myung government, I will build a more prosperous Yeongam — through rural basic income and attracting RE100 industrial complexes, among other efforts."
