People Power Party candidate Woo Sung-jin won the Daegu Dong-gu district mayor seat in Wednesday's nationwide local elections.
In a victory statement Thursday, Woo said the win marks the start of a new future for Dong-gu. "We will break free from being a neglected and underdeveloped part of the city and build Dong-gu into the central city of the Geumho River era — a place that opens a new future for Daegu," he said.
Woo also pledged to revitalize the local economy by nurturing healthcare and biotech industries centered on the innovation district, expanding AI- and big data-based industries, and creating jobs for young people.
"This will not be an administration I run alone," he said. "I will move forward together with the many experts and residents who love Dong-gu, and I will be a district mayor who listens to residents' voices more than anyone."
