Two women were swept into the sea by a wave while taking photos on a beach in Gangneung, with one found in cardiac arrest.
The Gangneung Coast Guard received a report at around 5:09 a.m. Saturday that two people had been swept into the water at Yeongjin Beach in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, and immediately dispatched a rescue team.
Coastal patrol officers entered the water using rescue ropes and other equipment and pulled both women to safety.
One of the two, a woman in her 30s, was unconscious and in cardiac arrest when found. Coast guard officers performed CPR and other emergency measures before she was transported to a hospital by ambulance. The other woman, in her 20s, showed symptoms of hypothermia and is receiving treatment at a hospital.
Coast guard officials are investigating the exact circumstances of the incident based on witness accounts suggesting the two were swept away by a large wave while taking photos on the beach.
