A magnitude 8.1 earthquake struck Monday morning in waters about 30 kilometers south of General Santos City on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said. The quake hit at 7:37 a.m. local time.
The epicenter was located at 5.653 degrees north latitude and 125.131 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) measured the quake at magnitude 7.8. A magnitude 6.3 aftershock followed. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning in connection with the earthquake.
