Trump spoke with Netanyahu before posting restraint call on Iran, Israel

US President Donald Trump spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by phone before posting a social media warning urging restraint, as Iran declared a halt to its retaliatory strikes against Israel.

However, the Israeli government has yet to issue an official statement confirming the call between the two leaders.

Reuters reported Monday that the call took place before Trump posted on social media urging Iran and Israel to exercise restraint amid renewed exchanges of fire between the two countries.

Israeli Channel 12 reported that Iran had announced it would halt attacks on Israel as long as Israel stopped striking Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group in Lebanon, but that Israel had not yet reached a final decision on how to handle the resumed hostilities with Iran.

An Israeli official told Channel 12 that the country was "waiting for clear instructions from the political leadership on the direction we should take."

Earlier, Iran fired 24 ballistic missiles at Israel in retaliation for Israeli airstrikes on Beirut, the Lebanese capital. Israel responded by deploying fighter jets twice, striking nine air defense sites in central and western Iran and a petrochemical complex in southwestern Iran.

Iran's military declared a suspension of operations against Israel — a move that came roughly an hour after Trump demanded on social media that "Israel and Iran must stop firing immediately."

The Khatam al-Anbia Central Headquarters, which coordinates Iran's military forces, said in a statement carried by Iranian media Monday that it had "inflicted a painful response on the Zionist regime" and declared "a halt to Iranian military operations."

The statement also claimed that "the mighty Iranian military supported the oppressed people of Lebanon in response to the brutal aggression and crimes of the Zionist regime committed in southern Lebanon and Dahiyeh" — a Hezbollah stronghold on the outskirts of Beirut — "with the criminal support of the United States."

The headquarters also issued a warning, saying that while Iranian military operations were being suspended, it was "making clear that if the enemy's aggression and crimes continue — including in southern Lebanon — we will respond with measures far stronger and more overwhelming than before."
