An engaged couple has sparked an online debate by arguing that the standard wedding gift amount should rise from 100,000 won (about $66) to 150,000 won, citing higher buffet costs.
The discussion began Wednesday when a post titled "Shouldn't wedding gift amounts go up?" appeared on the online community Nate Pann. The author, identified only as A, said she hoped the norm would shift. "Buffet prices keep going up these days, so I wish the atmosphere would change from 100,000 won to 150,000 won," she said.
She added that covering the shortfall out of pocket was no easy task. "From the perspective of someone getting married, it's not easy to make up the difference at 30,000 to 40,000 won per person, and I don't want to lose money on my own wedding," she said. "I know it's because I'm the one getting married, but there's really nothing left over." Her point was that when a guest gives 100,000 won, roughly 60,000 to 70,000 won goes toward the meal, leaving too little to cover other concessions.
The post spread quickly online, drawing a wide range of reactions. Some sided with the couple — "Gift amounts should reflect inflation" and "Isn't it common courtesy to give at least enough to cover the meal if you're close?" — while others pushed back sharply. "Weddings are paid for with your own money," wrote one commenter, and another said, "If you think you'll run a deficit, just don't have a wedding." A third added, "You chose the expensive buffet yourself — why pass the cost on to your guests?"
