The Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency presented a "Brave Citizen" commendation to Ko, a 17-year-old sophomore at Gwangju Bia High School who suffered serious injuries while trying to help a murder victim, the agency announced Thursday.
Ko was stabbed May 5 after rushing to the aid of Lee Chae-won, 17, who was being attacked by Jang Yun-gi, 23, on a street in Wolge-dong, Gwangsan-gu. Lee was killed in the attack.
Ko had been on his way home when he heard the victim screaming and ran to the scene.
Investigators found that Jang had distracted Ko by asking him to call 119 — a ruse that drew Ko's attention to his phone — before carrying out the attack.
Police thanked Ko, saying his selfless act embodied the spirit of civic courage and contributed to community safety.
