Jensen Huang's hiring secret: 'Smart is common. What matters most is humanity'

Jensen Huang, CEO of AI chipmaker Nvidia, has revealed what he values most when hiring talent.

Huang appeared Wednesday on tvN's variety show "You Quiz on the Block," filmed during his visit to South Korea from June 5 to 9. The episode drew wide attention even before it aired, as it marked his first appearance on an entertainment program anywhere in the world. He quickly won over the studio audience with his warm charm and quick wit.

Host Yoo Jae-suk asked Huang whether it was true that he does not simply hire the smartest people, and what qualities he specifically looks for.

"Intelligence is a commodity," Huang said. "There are so many smart people in the world — so many great universities, millions of great students. Our society produces an enormous amount of intelligence. It's now a common commodity, and it's everywhere. And on top of that, there's AI."

He said the most important quality is humanity. "If you're looking for someone to work with, you should look for someone who is generous," he said.

Huang said generosity includes genuinely wanting others to succeed. "Some people feel bad when someone else succeeds. When I see someone succeed, it makes me happy," he said.

"So when you're hiring, look for people who are generous and kind," he said. "Those qualities are truly valuable skills. People like that will succeed anywhere. If you want to succeed, surround yourself with people like that."
