Cheong Wa Dae said Sunday it hopes a US-Iran agreement will restore peace and stability in the Middle East and lead to the swift reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The statement came after Donald Trump announced he was set to sign a deal with Iran to end hostilities, and as President Lee Jae Myung was on a state visit to Italy.
"The government has been closely monitoring developments related to negotiations on a memorandum of understanding for an end of war between the United States and Iran, and in that regard takes note of President Trump's remarks," Cheong Wa Dae said in a statement. It added that it hopes "an agreement between the two sides will be reached, creating an opportunity to restore peace and stability in the Middle East and to promptly reopen the Strait of Hormuz."
"The government supports President Trump's related efforts and will continue to join the international community, including the United States, in working to ensure free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz," the statement said.
Trump said Saturday on social media that a deal "will be signed on Monday," adding that "immediately after signing, the Strait of Hormuz will be open to everyone." He also indicated his intent to secure a commitment from Iran on denuclearization, saying highly enriched uranium would be dealt with at the appropriate time.
