The Kospi triggered a buy-side sidecar — a temporary suspension of program buy orders — on Monday after surging more than 4 percent in early trading. It was the second consecutive trading session the mechanism had been activated, following a buy-side sidecar on Friday.
The sidecar is triggered when the KOSPI 200 futures price rises 5 percent or more above its reference price and holds that level for one minute, suspending program buy orders for five minutes.
As of 9 a.m., the Kospi was trading at 8,474.45, up 350.83 points, or 4.32 percent, from the previous session, according to Korea Exchange. The index opened at 8,526.12, a gain of 402.50 points, or 4.95 percent.
The rally came after news broke overnight that the United States and Iran had reached a ceasefire agreement.
The Kosdaq opened up 19.14 points, or 1.86 percent, at 1,048.19 and was trading at 1,044.08, up 15.03 points, or 1.46 percent, at the same time.
