Ban covers personal mobility devices, high-capacity batteries from July 1
High-capacity lithium batteries will be banned from all trains — including subway lines, KTX, ITX-saemaul and Mugunghwa services — to protect passengers from fire risk.
Korea Railroad Corporation (Korail) announced Monday that it will prohibit passengers from carrying items containing lithium batteries starting July 1.
On Greater Seoul metropolitan rail lines, the Daekyeong Line and the Donghae Line, the restriction will extend beyond trains to cover entry into station buildings as well.
Prohibited items include all personal mobility devices powered by lithium batteries — such as electric kickscooters and electric bicycles — as well as high-capacity portable lithium batteries exceeding 160 watt-hours, including those used for broadcasting or camping.
However, electric wheelchairs and medical scooters are exempt to protect the mobility rights of passengers with disabilities. Everyday devices with smaller batteries — such as mobile phones, laptops and portable chargers — are also not subject to the restriction.
