Two temporary shutdowns of the local tax system prompt deadline relief for taxpayers
South Jeolla Province will extend the local tax filing and payment deadline to July 3, as the local tax system will be temporarily shut down for data migration work tied to the launch of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City on July 1.
The extension is intended to minimize inconvenience to taxpayers, as access to the system will be restricted just before the payment deadline while officials update it to reflect administrative restructuring, including revisions to legal codes for administrative districts.
The local tax system is scheduled to go offline from 6 p.m. June 26 to 8 a.m. June 29, and again from 6 p.m. June 30 to 8 a.m. July 1. During those periods, local tax filing and payment services through the Wetax online portal will also be unavailable.
As a result, the first-installment automobile tax payment deadline will be pushed back three days, from June 30 to July 3. All other local taxes with filing or payment deadlines falling between June 26 and July 2 will likewise be extended to July 3.
The province will implement the deadline extension under Article 26 of the Framework Act on Local Taxes and Article 6 of its enforcement decree. It plans to work with local municipalities to actively inform residents and taxpayers of the Wetax outage and the extended deadline.
"We extended the local tax filing and payment deadline to ensure taxpayers do not face any inconvenience or disadvantage during the system transition that comes with the administrative restructuring," said Park Seong-yeol, head of South Jeolla Province's tax administration division. "We will work closely with municipalities to make sure residents and taxpayers are fully informed of the extended deadline."
