Non-Democratic Party bloc forms floor negotiation group in Yeosu City Council

Four Rebuilding Korea Party lawmakers and one independent to launch 'Citizens' Sovereignty Alliance' at press conference

Minority party lawmakers elected to the Yeosu City Council in the June 3 local elections are forming a floor negotiation group called the Citizens' Sovereignty Alliance.

Four Rebuilding Korea Party council members — Kim Sang-il, Kwon Seok-hwan, Baek Jin-o and Choi Hae-guk — along with independent Song Ha-jin, plan to hold a press conference Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Yeosu City Council's small conference room. They will announce the launch of the Citizens' Sovereignty Alliance and sign a formal agreement on its formation.

Kwon Seok-hwan, the group's floor leader-elect, said the council needs democratic governance that respects diverse opinions rather than unilateral decision-making dominated by the majority party. "The Citizens' Sovereignty Alliance was launched to bring the varied voices of citizens into the council and to achieve healthy checks and balances," he said.

The Yeosu City Council has 26 seats in total — 21 held by the Democratic Party, four by the Rebuilding Korea Party and one by an independent.

The neighboring Suncheon City Council has 25 seats, with 19 going to the Democratic Party, two to the Progressive Party, two to the Rebuilding Korea Party and two to independents. People Power Party council member Lee Se-eun of Suncheon announced she would not seek re-election.
