Six high school students beat classmate in Cheonan; victim undergoes emergency surgery

Six high school students who assaulted a classmate in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province, have been identified in a case that only recently came to light.

The Cheonan Seobook Police Station has booked a 17-year-old second-year high school student identified as A and five others on charges of violating the Punishment of Violences Act — specifically joint assault and joint bodily harm — and is currently investigating them, according to Yonhap News Agency on Monday.

The six are accused of repeatedly striking the face and body of a 17-year-old classmate identified as B inside a noraebang in Dujeong-dong, Seobook-gu, Cheonan, at around 11 p.m. on May 18. They are also alleged to have moved to a nearby parking lot and assaulted B again.

B suffered serious head injuries as a result and underwent emergency surgery. He has since been discharged from the hospital and is continuing treatment.

Police launched an investigation after receiving a report and have applied for arrest warrants for three of the suspects believed to have led or actively participated in the attack.

Meanwhile, seven middle school students in Cheonan allegedly beat a peer with an intellectual disability and illegally filmed the attack on May 26. The South Chungcheong Provincial Police Agency is currently investigating that case.
