Car burns to shell inside tunnel in Uljin

A car caught fire and was completely destroyed while traveling through a tunnel in Uljin, North Gyeongsang Province.

According to the North Gyeongsang Province Fire Headquarters, a fire broke out Monday around 1:04 p.m. inside Geumgangsong Tunnel No. 2 on National Route 36 in Ssangjeon-ri, Geumgangsong-myeon, Uljin-gun. The vehicle, an Avante sedan heading toward Bonghwa, was gutted.

The driver evacuated safely and there were no casualties.

Firefighters mobilized personnel and equipment to extinguish the blaze, and the tunnel reopened to traffic around 2:40 p.m.

Police and fire authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
