Giant South Korean flag unfurled at Dokdo

A giant South Korean flag has been unfurled at the Dokdo islets' pier.

Professor Seo Kyoung-duk of Sungshin Women's University, known as a "guardian of Dokdo," said Monday he and 70 citizens spread a giant Taegukgi — the South Korean national flag — across the islets.

Measuring 30 meters wide and 20 meters long, the flag was laid out Sunday on the pier of Dokdo's East Islet.

The event was part of a "Korean History Tour — Dokdo Edition" organized jointly by Seo and Tourista, a travel technology research institute. The flag carried particular significance as it was made with funds pooled by the 70 participants.

Photos from the flag display are spreading widely at home and abroad through social media.

A video of the event is also planned for release in multiple languages to convey to internet users around the world that Dokdo belongs to South Korea.

Seo said that 10 years ago, an even larger flag — 60 meters wide and 40 meters long — was floated on the sea between Dokdo's East and West Islets, drawing widespread attention.

He went on to say that "the only thing left now is a giant Taegukgi drone show in the skies above Dokdo," adding that he plans to continue promoting Dokdo globally not only through flag performances on land, sea and in the air, but also through cultural content.
