Honam University builds semiconductor talent pipeline as AI-focused institution for 7 consecutive years

Honam University, led by President Park Sang-cheol, is moving to build a "soft power talent ladder" through convergence-oriented education reform.

The success of advanced future industries depends not only on hardware-focused talent in semiconductors, materials, components and equipment, but also on convergence-type practitioners who can operate and manage those systems. With 800 trillion won ($578 billion) in semiconductor investment confirmed for the Gwangju and South Jeolla Province region, cultivating such interdisciplinary talent has become an urgent priority.

Building on AI competency training for all students developed since the university was designated an AI-focused institution in 2020, Honam University will introduce a multi-track curriculum for incoming students next year. The new system breaks away from the traditional department-centered academic structure, enabling the university to produce job-ready talent tailored to the needs of future industries.

Drawing on the educational capabilities it has built as an AI-focused institution, Honam University plans to continue developing convergence-type practitioners equipped to work in advanced local industries — including semiconductors, mobility, robotics and drones — and contribute to the sustainable growth of the regional industrial ecosystem.
