Gijang-gun's Park Tae-joon Memorial Hall to host humanities lecture series on steel

The Park Tae-joon Memorial Hall at Imrang Culture Park in Gijang-gun announced Tuesday that it will launch a humanities lecture series titled "A Nuclear Power Plant Humanities Journey with Local Residents — Philosophy: The Story of Steel Around Us" on July 23.

The three-week program, co-hosted and organized by Gijang-gun and the memorial hall, was selected through Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power's Gori Nuclear Power Headquarters' 2026 support project grant competition. It is a public-private partnership open to Gijang-gun residents and will run every Thursday for three consecutive weeks.

The memorial hall is a multipurpose cultural space in Imrang village, the hometown of the late Park Tae-joon — honorary chairman of Pohang Iron and Steel Co., known by his pen name Cheongam. The facility honors his legacy and offers residents access to high-quality cultural and educational programs.

The series will feature invited experts across three weekly sessions. The first two weeks will explore the life of Park Tae-joon, often called the "Steel King," alongside the role of steel in everyday life and industry, weaving together the region's history, industrial development and urban lifestyle in an accessible and engaging format.

The third and final week will include a special field trip tied to the lectures. Participants will visit the Posco History Museum, a steel mill and Postech (Pohang University of Science and Technology) in Pohang, gaining firsthand experience of the themes covered in the series and a deeper understanding of steel, industry and regional development.
