Dalseong-gun wins Ministry of Education self-directed learning center grant for 2nd consecutive year

Daegu's Dalseong-gun has been selected for the Ministry of Education's 2026 self-directed learning center grant program, making it two consecutive years the district has won the competitive grant, officials announced Tuesday.

The self-directed learning center program is a joint initiative among EBS, local governments and regional education offices designed to help students set their own learning goals and build sound study habits without relying on hagwon. Participating districts provide dedicated study spaces and personalized education programs through the program.

The centers also use EBS lecture materials and AI-based learning support services to diagnose students' academic levels, track their progress and recommend tailored content suited to each student's needs.

The new center in Guji-myeon will be built in unused space within the Guji-myeon public health subcenter.

Dalseong-gun plans to equip the facility with open and focused study rooms, a counseling room and a lounge so students can concentrate in a safe, comfortable environment, with all educational services provided free of charge. Full operations are scheduled to begin in March 2027.

"Following the Dalseong Ireum Camp last year, being selected again this year as the only district in Daegu to win the grant two years in a row is a testament to Dalseong-gun's passion for education," Dalseong-gun Mayor Choe Jae-hun said. "Building on this proven model of self-directed learning, we will create a Dalseong-gun where residents no longer need to travel to the city center or hagwon districts for their children's education."
