Unit to conduct field survey of 190,000 local tax and non-tax delinquency cases
Mapo-gu announced it will operate a "local tax revenue delinquency management unit" and recruit participants to strengthen collection of overdue local taxes and non-tax revenue and secure stable tax income.
The district currently has about 27.2 billion won ($17.5 million) in unpaid local taxes and non-tax revenue, with delinquency cases exceeding 190,000. Management had previously focused on high-value and repeat delinquents, leaving gaps in investigating small-amount delinquencies and cases requiring an assessment of payment capacity.
Mapo-gu is also suspending delinquent tax enforcement proceedings on long-neglected seized assets where collection offers no practical benefit. The suspension keeps the seizure in place but halts further disposal procedures — such as public auction — for assets where recovery is in effect impossible.
The unit's main duties will include telephone consultations with delinquents, payment guidance, and field visits to assess living conditions and encourage payment. Targets include those with unpaid local taxes of less than 1 million won and delinquents in the five underperforming non-tax revenue categories: fines, levies, compliance enforcement fees, surcharges and indemnity charges.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old as of the announcement date; there are no restrictions on gender or educational background. Applications will be accepted July 6 through July 10 and must be submitted online through the Seoul Metropolitan Government's delinquency management unit recruitment website.
Those selected will work for four months, from Aug. 3 through Nov. 30. Further details are available on the Mapo-gu district office website or by contacting the district's tax collection division.
"Operating the delinquency management unit will be an opportunity to reduce blind spots in delinquency management and lay a more efficient foundation for revenue administration," district Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun said. "We will do our utmost to realize fair tax administration and secure stable tax revenue."
