A police officer has been booked on charges of killing a woman in her 60s after running over her with a patrol car as she lay in the road.
The Incheon Michuhol Police Station said Friday it is investigating a patrol officer in her 20s, identified only by the initial A, on charges of causing death under the Act on Special Cases Concerning Traffic Accidents. She is assigned to a local police unit in the district.
Officer A is accused of running over a woman in her 60s, identified as B, who was lying on a side street in Sungui-dong, Michuhol-gu, at around 12:45 a.m. Friday, killing her.
Officer A had been dispatched to the scene along with Sergeant C, a colleague from the same unit, after receiving a report that a person had collapsed in the road — only to run over the very person they had been called to help.
Police said the area where the accident occurred was relatively dark and adjoined a left-turn section of the road.
Officer A reportedly told investigators she had not properly seen B lying in the road.
Police said they are working to determine the exact circumstances of the accident and will review whether to seek an arrest warrant.
Meanwhile, Sergeant C, who was riding in the patrol car with Officer A, is not considered subject to punishment, as investigators found no driving duty of care applied to him.
